Our Story
A journey spanning across decades bringing you the Evenbrooke you know and love.

Early Beginnings
The property here on Highway 64 in Lexington has a rich history of turning houses into homes, all beginning in the mid-1950s when Mr. Frank Shoaf built the original building and created Shoaf Wayside Furniture. Shortly after in the mid-1970s, a second building was constructed on property to house J&J Carpet. After many years of operation, the McCullough family acquired the property in 2001 where Brad operated a traditional retail furniture store for over a decade, consistently working alongside his father, Jerry, extended family, his wife, Dawn, and eventually two daughters, Anna and Amber. As the years went on, Dawn specifically began to show an increasing interest in antique and vendor markets. Brad, Dawn, Anna, and Amber found themselves in the years leading up to 2019 exploring many of them in surrounding areas spending days at them shopping and experiencing everything they had to offer. They became a regular hobby for Dawn especially, who started to fall in love with the immersive nature of these environments as well as with the look and feel of antique home decor. Her interest trickled over to Brad, who started repurposing furniture and playing around with painting and distressing it in different ways, and ultimately this joint interest led them to begin discussing perhaps starting an antique vendor marketplace of their own. Finally, in 2019, Evenbrooke Marketplace was born, and the rest is history.

Our Name
A question we often hear in a day at Evenbrooke is, “Where did your name come from?”. The answer goes back to when Brad’s two daughters, Anna and Amber, were only about seven and five years old, respectively. When Anna and Amber were growing up, they always enjoyed coming up with fun, make-believe stories together with their father. One day, Brad decided to sit down and write a full-length book for himself and the girls to read and enjoy with Anna and Amber starring as the two main characters. The name for this story? You guessed it, Evenbrooke! Anna and Amber’s middle names. To this day, Brad remembers thinking to himself, “That’s an interesting name. I’m gonna tuck that away for something special in the future,” and years later, it seemed to be the perfect fit for the new business that he was forming. While the story, Evenbrooke, was by no means ever going to be a bestselling novel, it remains a special memory for the McCullough family and a heartwarming origin of the name you know and love as Evenbrooke Marketplace.

Always Growing
When it first opened in April of 2019, Evenbrooke only lived within what we now call the “Ruby Road” showroom with only about twelve vendors. Today, Evenbrooke spans across approximately thirty thousand square feet throughout two buildings and houses about one hundred and thirty to one hundred and forty vendor spaces. Things are constantly evolving here at Evenbrooke with new items, vendors, and ideas flowing in and out every single day. Plans to expand are always floating around, with current plans to construct an event space between the two Evenbrooke buildings that can host exciting activities from live music to farmers market festivities. The journey Evenbrooke has gone through to become what it is today has certainly been incredible, and for everyone involved it has been so much fun to watch it grow and offer an escape to all of our customers throughout the years. We can’t wait to see where our journey leads in the years to come as Evenbrooke Marketplace continues to serve its community in the ways it knows best.
“Often, we reference Evenbrooke as ‘our little piece of the world’. Our hope is that you have been able to make it a pleasant piece of yours as well.”
